Reporting that there is MoFun in MoWind!

From the May 31 – June 1 TABA regatta.  Here are some clips and images I put together into a video and posted up on You Tube.    In the first racing clip you’ll see Stephanie Todd / CAN7 performing her Stop Jibe at the leeward mark. 

  

The racing action was great in 2008 with six races all in premium onshore winds meaning there were no lulls to speak of.   A basic two mark course with a windward and leeward mark was used.  

For the first two races on Saturday we did two grueling laps in heavy winds.  I was totally spent having used my Retro 7.5.  Saturday after lunch racing was canceled as winds were well over 20mph and the committee boats were unsafe to anchor as waves broke over the bow.    On Sunday the course was shorter and we did four one lap races in winds where I was powered up to the max on the Prodigy Comp 8.5 One Design sail.  

We had a nice turnout of 11 Mistral Prodigy in the Hybrid fleet.   Two of our RC crew that manned the boats were Prodigy racers so we could of got a couple more out there if we had more local volunteers.

No rain .. sun .. warm air .. and onshore wind made for a great weekend on Maumee Bay on Lake Erie. A simple two mark course with a windward and a leeward mark was used with A fleet doing twice around and sport fleet once. The conditions on Saturday went from 7.5 at the start of the first race quickly to 5.5 conditions by the end of the second race before lunch break. I battled my way around the course on a 7.5 and was totally spent afterwards. Many had to drop out. After lunch the wind decided to pick up even more and was a solid 20 with big gusts. Though we tried, it became apparent our smallish RC boats were not going to cut it in the three foot rollers that formed. Those that had them broke out their short boards and were treated to 3.5 to 4.5 conditions to dark. Below is the shot of the wind whipping up a sand storm on the beach that day. Truly epic conditions.

Sunday morning winds were again onshore at about fifth-teen mph with long gusts and a few lulls. We did four one lap races and it was all I could do at times to hold down the Prodigy 8.5 Comp sail. There were lots of smiles and I believe everyone felt they got more wind then they bargained for this year. Below A fleeters play bumper cars at the start line.

Several in attendance are planning on showing up at the Nationals and this was surely a good warm up race. We had about 34 registered which we thought was a great turnout with gas prices being up there like they are. The Saturday night party at Packos as always was outstanding and the raffle was extra large this year with many taking home some really nice items. We will get the scores posted later this week.

The Saylorville Dam Jam took place this weekend. The results from the regatta can be found here. A full report with pictures and play by play action will follow. Robin Shaw was the overall winner followed by Don Altmeyer and Jeff Adamski.

The 2008 edition of the Walley Wagatta is now over.

 It was a dynamic weekend that included some great light wind long board racing on Saturday as well as some intense high wind short board racing Sunday. We utilized two different courses Saturday, first a modified typical MOWIND Kevin Gratton course but instead of starting trying to get to the upwind mark we started on a full reach, hoping we could be ahead of the Div 2 boards into the jibes. This was a fun course that worked out great, see link below for full explanation of how it was done. We might try it again this weekend at the Dam Jam.

After our mid day (or mid afternoon) break Saturday we changed the course to a more slalom look alike course. The conditions were still light so it was still longboarded that ruled. We started by jibing down the course and then when you reached to last mark you had to do the same back but instead of jibing you tacked the course upwind instead. This was intersting when you met people at the markers that were on their way downwind when you were heading upwind. This works well in non-planing conditions but would be pretty scketchy in light wind. See example of course below.

Sunday we woke up to light rain and lots more wind. Before our race meeting it was blowing 20-25 MPH, the word for the day was slalom racing. Kevin set a course close to the beech since it was straight onshore. After 3 of them we took a break and then set a long distance course. People were sailinb mainly short boards and 6.0 – 7.5 sails. some were on long boards. Andy Gratton kicked butt on a Gaastra 7.5 and his Equippe. Arden sailed a 80 some liter short board and a 6.5m.

Below is the course we sailed in the short slalom races, lots of jibes.  

 

The long distance race is not shown here but it mainly included the same start as in this slalom, but you headed straight to the light house where there was a bouy, jibe it, then across the lake (4-5 miles) to the deadwood point (pretty far upwind) jibe the bouy there, then sail back to lighthouse, jibe the bouy again and then back towards the start where you had to complete the  jibe course above (after about 1 hrs of sailing) then finish by the finish line by the dock. Andy Gratton won that race ahead of Arden. Andy was on a equippe and 7.5, arden on a ML 101 Formula and a 9.0 North sail. Arden’s brother got in 3rd with a Starboard formula and a 7.5 NP RS6, Don Altmeyer got 4th with a 110 l slalom board and a Gaastra nitro 7.0.

2008 Walleye Wagatta Results

The first Alum Creek Regatta was in 1983,  and May 3-4 2008 showed us that it is still happening!   There were 17 on the start line Saturday morning in inclement rainy weather conditions not fit for ducks.    Alum Creek State Park is located just off US-23 a dozen miles north of I-270 in Columbus Ohio.   It’s a great state park facility with a campground, a beach area and the marina area serving as the site for the regatta.    Below you can see that the marina area has plenty of parking close to the water and lots of grass for rigging as particpants do just that on Saturday morning.    

 Saturday four races were ran and as the afternoon skies cleared the winds came gusting well into the twenties blowing half the fleet off the course.  Several opted to just go short boarding the remainder of the afternoon on 6.0ish size sails.    Three more races were ran on  Sunday in light conditions with bright sunny skies overhead.    Below Paul Sandstrom crosses the start line with Joe Belhobeck having been there already.

 Windsurfers from Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland and of course the Columbus area itself were in attendance.   A Saturday evening party for 22 was held a few miles down the road on US-23 at the RoadHouse Grill which was a fun place with 99 cent draft all night long.    The Ohio/MI Prodigy Fleet had 4 in attendance with Dave Chapman taking 1st, Scott Haas 2nd, Rod Clevenger 3rd and Jim Donahue 4th.
