Here are some more files that I have been meaning to get online since September. Apologies for the delay. Hopefully I can get some writeups on the fall regattas posted in the next few weeks. If anyone would like to contribute regattas reports or other stories, feel free to post, or email me at arden.EL11@gmail.com and I can get it on the site for you.

2012 Florida Week Feb 25 – March 4

Wow … it’s already getting close to that time of year.  Yes the time of year to make time to plan travel arrangements for a few get-a-way windsurfing days to the sunshine state.   Assuming things are as in the past it should be possible to fly down and charter a KONA for both of these events.   You’ll need to contact the people at Sandy Point Progressive Sports to reserve a KONA.    To get there you could possibly use Allegiant Air which has  flights to St. Pete and then catch Allegiant back again using their Orlando/Sanford location.  One way prices are around $110.

The Island Style Classic / Senior Masters  is posted to be ran Feb 25-26, 2012 in Sarasota Florida.  Hosted at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron club facilities with windsurf rigging and  launching at the adjoining Ken Thompson city park.     This is racing on inter-coastal waters so there is no ocean shore-break to contend with.   The water depth in the much of the usual course area is just a few feet so waves don’t come into play either.

The Calmea 2012 Mid-Winters is set for  Thursday March 1st through Sunday March 4th.  Thursday is late registration and required check-in day, usually with a huge welcome party and skippers meeting held early evening.     If you have not been there in the past know that Kelly Park where the Calema shop is located is a nice safe site to windsurf from and has rental gear.   Again this is inter-coastal windsurfing so no ocean swells or shore break to contend with.   The March weather can vary greatly from 88 to 58.  I have found that wearing a light wetsuit is good to protect snow white skin from the Florida spring sun.   However surely bring your shorts because if you hit a few warm 82 degree days in a row you’ll need them.

In past years the Banana River Windsurfing resort has hosted a clinic during the break between the two above mentioned races.  BRW also offers some accommodations but you’ll need to check in with them well in advance.   There are plenty of hotels in the area but it’s wise to shop around beforehand to find something that matches your budget.

Fond Du Lac Windpower Champs Sept 24-25

Never been to Fond Du Lac and windsurfed Lake Winnebago?  Here is your excuse to do a bit of traveling!

Please see this notice of race flyer  . pdf file with registration form for all the details.   Friday Sept 23rd a long distance event is planned,  along with the racing some Saturday evening activities with awards for  2011 MOWIND Series are planned.

Kevin is looking for Race Directors to run  the 2012 event.  So if you are interested in putting event managment on your resume now is the time to step up.    Give him  a call at his  Windpower Windsurfing shop.   It probably would be good to tag along after him during this 2011 event and take some notes and drain his brain a bit.

Menominee Festival

August 6th and 7th saw the passing of yet another fun weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan in the city of Marinette/Menominee.  Racers and their families trickled in on Friday night and Saturday morning to set up camp right on the beach.  Leisure sailing and activities took place in the morning and afternoon as racers waited for the wind to fill in, and then competed in light to medium winds on an M-course.  For dinner, pizza and drinks on the beach provided a congregating spot for everyone to talk about the events of the day and catch up with each other.  It was uncertain whether the usual expected fireworks on Saturday night would occur due to rain, but it let up and the fireworks lived up to their standard of putting on a good show.

Sunday was dominated by less pleasant weather but gave more challenging conditions to the racers.  Winds were stronger and out of the northeast, giving a bigger swell to the waves and making the jibe marks interesting.  All in all, there were two good days of racing, plenty of time to socialize, and fun was had by all.

Tour da Croix and Kona

A quick update on the Tour da Croix this weekend:

I have communicated with Mike Fox about getting the Kona charter fleet to the event. He has indicated that Kona charters will be at the Tour da Croix. I plan on sailing one and encourage as many people to join me as possible. The Tour da Croix is an ideal event to try a Kona for the first time since the boards will be there, and it is a one-day/one-race event.

Here is a link to the event page and registration/schedule information.
