July 17th, 2011 — Ohio
The second annual July 16, 17 Reservoir Rendezvous Regatta at the New London Ohio Campground was once again a smashing success.  Lots of spouses, kids and non-racers joined the windsurfing water fun along the big non-swimming beach area.   Lunch captain Carl Rappaport served up lunch wraps and a Saturday evening barbecue along with Sunday morning breakfast treats.    Â

Windsurfers enjoy lunch.
A $10 entry fee and $15 food ticket along with a camping discount that weekend for windsurfers put smiles on faces. Thanks much to the City of New London for sponsoring some very nice award trophies. Also thanks to campground manager Nellie and crew for setting the area up nicely and putting up with us.   About a dozen people arrived late Friday afternoon and got camp tents set up.   Some even got a few practice runs in.  More arrived early evening and all enjoyed a Friday night campfire party. Â
Saturday evening the group set around a big  campfire under a full moon reflecting off the lake.   The gentle breezes blowing got a couple windsurfers on the water for moonlight sailing.   Sean B. wowed the crowd with his log rolling skills.  The kids played with bug zapper rackets and burned up plenty of marshmellows.

Saturday six races were ran on a course that we call the New London Twisted Eights.     With the start line, final jibe mark and finish gate located right infront of the beach area spectators, spouses and kids had a great view of the action.

Â
Great shifty breezes and puffs that got you up on a plane for twenty seconds made it exciting.    The event saw it’s first Original Windsurfer One Design start with four Original Windsurfers on the course.  There were lots of takers demo riding the Original Windsurfers Ted Schweitzer brought with him.   Claudia from the Netherlands blazed around the course one race on an Original  and had a great time meeting new American windsurfer pals.  Â
Sunday we awoke to a thick fog that lifted around 10.  The first race got under way around 10:30 in light air that went to near calm conditions shortly into the race.  Several managed to finish a 40 minute pumpathon.  The wind came back a little but everyone was wore out and extremely hot after that first race.  The weather changed from nice to heat dome mode around noonish so it was time for the awards.

Hope to see more of our GPWC and TABA friends next year.  The BONCs and COWS are ruling that twisted eight course.
June 19th, 2011 — Michigan
Clear skies greeted contestants at the Saturday June 18th  Grosse Pointe Windsurfing Club regatta.    The event is  held at Patterson Park on Lake St. Clair just north of downtown Detroit Michigan.    Nat Sidall won the Prodigy class and was fleet overall champion this year.

Nat Sidall displays his 1st place trophy.
Â
Longboard class was won by Mark Murray, Rod Clevenger won the Senior Prodigy class and Ted Schweitzer won the Original Windsurfer class.      The event was international again this year with three Canadian contestants.  Â

New and old designs fight it out at the finish line.
Five long two lap races were ran in a three hour marathon morning session.  After lunch break racers were greeted with very low winds.   The R/C decided to call it and we were glad for that as there is a slight current here which can make getting around certain legs extra difficult in light winds.
Windsurfing action continues in Michigan June 25 with another race in the Original Windsurfer series held in Traverse City Michigan.   No race equipment? No problem as several new Original Windsurfers are available.  Any board is welcome .. come join the fun at one of Michigan’s best summer tourist destinations.

The MOWIND classes page  (link also available in right menu)  has been updated for 2011.  The suggested A Fleet class list is now:  KONA, Raceboard, Open Unlmited, 8.5 Limited and Women.   Classes in the Sport and Workshop fleet remain the same.     Warm weather and racing will be here again soon so be sure to check out if these classes are ones you might want to participate in this season.   Â

MOWIND wants to help the KONA One Design class grow and even suggests this class be given it’s own start when numbers are sufficient.    A successful and windy 2010 KONA Worlds was recently held in Miami.  The boards and rigs used in the Worlds are being sold at reduced prices.   This class uses the 220 liter KONA One longboard with an RAF KONA sail size maximum based on a sailors weight.
-  6.6 sail  64.9 kilos or less
- Â 7.4 65 to 74.9 kilos
- Â 8.2 sail 75 to 84.9 kilos
-  9.0 sail  85 kilos and up
see http://www.kona-windsurfing.com/Â for informaton on the KONA one design class.

The Raceboard  class has been around for near a decade internationally and supports modern production longboards and hybrid boards.  It’s gear limits of one hull and two sails per event helps greatly in reducing the cost of competing.  There is also a sail size maximum of 9.5 for men and 8.5 for women and juniors.   Â
see http://www.raceboard.org/Â for information on the Raceboard class rules and approved boards.
The popular MOWIND 8.5 Limited and Open Unlimited classes remain as they are were with no hull limits.
